Probably originated in the Palearctic region and subsequently became cosmopolitan through human-assisted dispersal.

Palearctic populations are considered part of the original distribution range; genetic diversity is currently widespread in cosmopolitan populations. There is no evidence of genetic isolation among geographically separated Lucilia sericata populations.

Lucilia sericata can persist in a wide range of terrestrial environments, particularly temperate urban, peri-urban, agricultural and pastoral habitats where carrion, animal waste or other decomposing organic material provides larval breeding substrates. Populations are favored by moderate-to-warm temperatures and adequate moisture, and the species can also proliferate in livestock environments where wounds or wet/soiled fleece provide substrates for facultative myiasis.

Cosmopolitan species occurring throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. It is among the most widespread blowflies worldwide.

Larvae may cause facultative wound myiasis in humans and animals. The species is also widely used in medicinal maggot therapy and forensic entomology. No specific allergenic effects were identified in the reviewed sources.
